Chapter 13
Josh
My mother-in-law was too taken aback to comment, but the Marshal was generous with his congratulations. âJosh, erâ¦Miss Tess, Iâm happy for you both. I know Belinda would want you to be happy and move on, Josh. Congratulations.â
He moved forward and shook me warmly by the hand and then shook Tessâs hand too for good measure. Seeing that she had lost control over the argument, Sharon followed her husbandâs lead, saying, âWhat a surprise. Do you mind if we sit down?â
Tess gestured over to the two armchairs by the fire. One was a rocking chair, and I noticed the Marshal relax as the motion rocked his worries away. It used to do the same thing to my Grandpap too. But we are not in the clear yet. I was secretly praying real hard that Tess would go along for the ride because itâs clear to see that Sharon has her mom hat and wife apron on.
âSoâ¦Tess, Josh. How did you two meet? Not that itâs sudden, of course. Itâs just that Josh has never mentioned anything about you to us, Tess.â
I looked over at Tess, hoping the pleading expression on my face was not that obvious.
âThatâs a really good question, Mrs. Davies. I didnât realize Josh was so good at keeping all the people he loves updated with everything new in his life.â Tess shot a look at me, and I picked up the ball and ran with it. âShoot, Sharon, youâll get me into trouble with the Little Woman! Tell the truth now, Sharon: when was the last time I ever took the time to write you?â
Mrs. Sharon Davies swallowed air a few times before replying. âWell, I suppose youâre right there, Josh. Blake and I consider ourselves blessed if we get so much as a Christmas card from you.â
U. S. Marshal Blake Davies piped up. âTwo Christmas emails and one photo file of Amelia. Thatâs it. And I have the strong suspicion that most of the photographs were taken by that other nanny.â
I saw Tess whip out her phone and begin typing using her thumbs. She looked up when Sharon asked her what she was doing. âExcuse my rudeness, Mrs. Davies, but Iâm just making a note about stuff that needs doing. See, Iâve typed âsort out a communications tower for the ranch.â The problem is that connectivity is sketchy out here. The ranch hands are complaining about it all the time. Apparently, it has something to do with the topography of the terrain and the mineral deposits in the soil. We have to get a couple more satellite phones and a tower installedâ¦but donât hold your breath about more emails from Josh - heâs always losing his phones when they fall out of his shirt pocket while heâs tagging cattleâ¦or playing with his lasso.â She shot a naughty look over at me, but I managed to keep a straight face. Tess gave me a cheeky smile and continued. âHey, how about I schedule you to receive
